SMG NEWS UPDATE!

We’ve got some BIG news making its way to you in 2013 & we’ll continue to keep you informed with strategic business affairs!

ASIA IS ON FIRE: It’s a hot topic right now: music in Asia! The big players are expanding there and local ones are building their businesses – and that’s only the beginning.  In response to this growth, Sugo Music Group and our partners have built up considerable presence in Singapore and India, making the most of all the opportunities out there and creating as many new ones as we can for our labels.

QUESTION OF THE MONTH: People ask us all the time, “Will SMG start selling downloads in Japan, Hong Kong and the rest of Asia?”Well, the good news is that we are already selling downloads in Asia! We’ve been a partner with iTunes since it launched in 2003–and iTunes Japan has been selling downloads since 2005. Sugo Music Group also sells downloads in Japan via Amazon Japan, as well as select content through several other local services. In June 2012,iTunes launched several other stores in Asia, including Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines, Hong Kong, Thailand, Macau, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Brunei and Sri Lanka. Other deals inked include KKBOX, one of the largest Asian digital download services in Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore and Hong Kong; 88TC88, a premier web and mobile-based music retailer servicing China and based in Beijing, Germany and L.A.; and 2muse, the leading in-store background music content provider in China.

WHAT ABOUT SOUTH KOREA? iTunes has yet to launch in South Korea, but in the meantime your music would be available on local services like Melon and Bugs. Global digital services are fast expanding into Asia and Sugo Music Group and our partners are doing more direct deals in the region–so be on the look out for more sales in Asia coming soon!

YOUTUBE IS CHANGING! Back in November, YouTube launched a new channel-driven experience for logged-in users. This experience encourages users to subscribe and provides a feed-like experience when logged in. Ultimately YouTube is looking to build audiences. Not only do engaged audiences attract advertisers (at higher rates), but they create brand loyalty to specific channels. The long-term goal here is for YouTube to be a real alternative to television, not a source for “cat” videos (unless you make incredible cat videos, of course!). Given that goal, YouTube’s algorithms have also begun to change. The emphasis is coming off of “overall plays” while giving more importance to other factors: combined subscribership, overall minutes watched, and number of videos watched were given additional weight over the last few months, and as a result traffic patterns have changed. Videos that may once have been holed off in the dregs of page 10 in search results and never popped up in suggested videos are suddenly trumping videos with more views or prominence!

EMUSIC’s NEW U.S. “A LA CARTE” DOWNLOAD SERVICE:

What does this mean for you? Well, for one, it means access to loads of more users because all those eMusic visitors who are NOT members will finally be able to purchase music on the site. eMusic will now monetize more of their 30 million monthly site visitors & thus be a better source of revenue for YOU.

NEW SPOTIFY TERRITORIES: Reports suggested it was coming, but recently Spotify finally brought its popular music streaming service to Italy, Portugal and Poland. Sugo Music is now, of course, servicing all territories.

SOUND EXCHANGE: Sugo Music is proud to report that we are now a part of Sound Exchange’s International Performer Database Association (IPDA) as well as five new reciprocal agreements with record label collecting societies in France, Spain, Sweden, Ireland and Jamaica. With the addition of these agreements, it brings SoundExchange total number of international agreements to 22. We expect this number to double in the next 12-24 months!

APPLE INTERNET RADIO: Apple is currently negotiating with labels to license master-rights for an Internet radio service that would offer custom channels in a way similar to Pandora and Clear Channel’s iHeartRadio. We are monitoring this very closely and will one of the first to be a part of this new distribution!

PANDORA SUES ASCAP: The move is the latest by the Internet radio company to lower the amount it pays rights holders, performing artists and composers. Stay tuned & we’ll update you!

ITUNES LAUNCHES IN 56 NEW TERRITORIES: Apple’s iTunes Store expands its global footprint by launching in 56 new territories, with Russia, India, South Africa and Turkey among the larger newcomers. iTunes is still our #1 retailer, yet there are so many new partners in our distribution portfolio that we are currently witnessing a gradual global attrition set in. In the end, it’ll all add up to more distribution DOLLARS for you!

INTERNET RADIO FAIRNESS ACT: The music industry is in transition. It’s an exciting time, but we cannot stand on the sidelines while revenue streams you’ve counted on for decades are gradually eroded by possible legislation. Undervaluing musicians’ streaming royalties (e.g. Pandora) runs contrary to global practice. Being a part of the Sugo Music Group team is a great first step as we join the collective power of more than a BILLION music members – a huge advantage when we all make our case in the courts and on Capitol Hill this year.
